Why reuse comes first
Recycling an IBC tote is the last step, not the first.
A tote that can be cleaned and reused keeps doing its job, and reusing it avoids making a new one. Recycling is still useful, but grinding a bottle into regrind means the vessel itself is gone.
So the order is simple: reuse the tote if it is sound, replace the bottle if only the bottle is worn, and recycle the parts where facilities accept them when nothing else is left.
Who uses totes
Different industries, different definitions of “clean”.
A grower's clean and a distillery's clean are not the same thing. Tell the supplier what the tote will hold and the standard you need to meet.

Common questions
What is the difference between a rebottled and a reconditioned IBC tote?
A reconditioned tote keeps its original HDPE bottle: it is washed, inspected and usually fitted with a new valve and gaskets. A rebottled tote gets a new bottle fitted into a used cage and pallet base. Rebottled units generally cost more and look new inside; reconditioned units generally cost less and keep more material in use. Ask the partner supplier how the units in your quote were cleaned and tested.
Can I sell my used IBC totes?
Yes. Send a request with the count, size, prior contents and your ZIP code. We pass it to a partner supplier in our network, who follows up with an offer or tells you the totes are not a fit. Offers depend on grade, prior contents, quantity and location, so there is no fixed price list.
Can a used IBC tote be food grade?
It depends on the tote's history and on the rules that apply to your product. Generally, a used tote is only considered for food contact when its prior contents are documented, or when it is rebottled with a new food-contact bottle. Ask the supplier for documentation and check current regulations before you use any tote for food.
How much do IBC totes and freight cost?
Pricing is by quote from partner suppliers. It depends on grade, size, quantity, freight distance and how the totes are loaded, so we don't publish prices. Your quote request is free and there is no obligation.
What happens to a tote that cannot be reused?
It can usually be taken apart. The HDPE bottle can be recycled where a facility accepts it, the steel cage can go to scrap metal recycling, and pallet bases can be repaired or recycled. Availability depends on partner suppliers and local facilities.

Have totes sitting behind the building?
Sound totes are worth more in one piece than in pieces. Send the count, size and prior contents, and a partner supplier follows up with an offer or a recycling option.
